Lane 9 Podcast Episode 6: NYC Half-Marathon Race Recap
On Sunday March 17 2024, Lane 9 Project co-founder Heather Caplan ran the United Airlines NYC Half-Marathon as part of the &Mother fundraising team. It wasn’t exactly the run she was hoping to have, but she finished! On this episode, Heather and fellow Lane 9 co-founder Alexis Fairbanks talk about this race, and how having a “mid” (or mediocre) day is far more common than the PRs, the magical feeling-great days, etc.
They also discuss a recent article about postpartum running injuries, and again, the more common slow and non-linear running process that many birthing parents face. Should we be “celebrating” the big accomplishments (PRs under one year postpartum? Gold medal races?), or does that fuel the narratives that create unrealistic-for-most expectations? Each athlete’s experience with postpartum injuries, pelvic floor PT (let’s normalize that!), and fitness are vastly different.
And what if we found more fun on the run? And outside of training? Recently Heather and Alexis met up in Colorado for a day of skiing—which one could consider cross-training, or could just say “This is a thing I do for fun!”
